Happy 20th Birthday Mike!

To commemorate Mike's 20th birthday (July 26th) and to get ready for his year mark on his mission August 2nd, I think we should reminisce a little bit. Send in your comments, or pictures of Mike just before he left on his mission and tell us something that you miss, something that you remember, or anything you want to say about Mike. You can either drop them in the comment link below, or send pictures and stories to Travsbox@gmail.com and I'll put them in posts to follow this one. I'll get us started with this one...

Thanks for bringing this picture over today Staci... Mike held out for a little over a month, till I got home from my mission so that I could baptize him. He was one of the lucky few to do this down at the Tabernacle on Temple Square when they still did baptisms there.

This fishing trip was about this time last year. His last he would go on as a pre-missionary. As you can see by this picture, we all caught some big trout and had a blast. As I just got home from another successful fishing trip today, I can't help but remember exactly a year ago fishing with Mike.

The day we all headed down to say goodbye at the MTC was a mix of emotions. Again, almost exactly a year ago on August 2nd. We were all sharing the excited energy that Mike had that day, then came the spiritual high at the MTC, and the tearful goodbye at the end. We all went to Mimi's in Provo afterward and it just wasn't the same without Mike. As much as we all enjoy our family functions, it's still just a little different without him there.

The last walk into the chapel at the MTC. You can see the confidence in his face. I love this picture. Happy Birthday Mike. I love you. See you in one short year!

Elder Alexander, Happy Birthday! Twenty years old! Now you are no longer a teen-ager. But from all that we have read about you this past year as you have served your mission, you have become a man already. We are so proud of the man you have become. You are a good missionary and are representing your God, your church, as well as your family so well. Keep up the good work and know you are in our prayers. We will see you about this time next year!

Love, Uncle Howard and Aunt Margaret

Michael,

So, it’s your 20th Birthday? What a great time of life. Even if you are just a young pup, you have the promise of a great life ahead of you. This is because you are a Son of God; because you have embraced the truth, and because you are unique and have special qualities that make you who you are. Although you are going through transitions in age, experience, maturity, etc., the great thing is that you are you and you will always be you. Never discount this or disregard this fact. Remember, the Lord has placed you on the earth at a time and in a place where you can touch and bless the lives of certain individuals who are also children of Heavenly Father. And, in some instances you are the only person who can do this. That is why it is important for you to be prepared to act when the spirit prompts you.

Now, Michael, one of the qualities I admire most in you is your enthusiasm for life and opportunity. Everything you do you do with gusto… I recall with much delight watching the video you sent to us in Georgia of you and your buds jumping and diving from a steel bridge into a river below. Although this may not have been the smartest activity right before your mission (as you could have gotten hurt, and I’m sure your Mom would not have approved) it exemplifies in my mind your zest for life and sharing fun times with your friends. It also exemplifies your willingness to venture beyond the circle of safety and trust in the Lord to guide you as you move into new challenges in your life.

Thank you Michael for your wonderful spirit, your hard work and your great example. You are truly an instrument in the Lord’s hands.

Happy 20th Birthday!!!

Love,

Uncle Don, Aunt Lee Ann, Taylor, Jeffrey and Emily

Mike, happy birthday!! Time has flew fast since you left. We have just one more year before you get to finally come home! I miss you and I miss your willingness to help me out with a lot of things. You've always been there for me and always made sure I was happy. Even if you just bring me one of the cats to put a smile on my face. I love that about you. You are such a good brother to me and to all of us and we all look up to you in so many ways. We have a little Maynard at home who has the same blonde hair and blue eyes just like you and I know he will adore you when you come home. You two are alike! You're the best Mike and you are doing the greatest thing the Lord wants you to do. We love you and miss you very much!!

Mike, Congrats on surviving to age 20. Fishing is not that good this year so you are not missing much. So good luck with the mission and enjoy the simple life before you have to come home and be an adult.
